The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 states that in a workplace environment, it is the legal duty of a ‘responsible person’ to provide a safe means of evacuation for those who are less mobile in the event of an emergency.

So, while businesses aren’t required by law to provide an evacuation chair, if you leave somebody behind in an emergency you would be breaching this legislation.

In addition to this, it is also unlawful to discriminate against anyone with a disability under the Disabled Discrimination Act 2005 and/or Equality Act 2010.

Leaving someone with a disability behind during an emergency is not only discriminatory, it is also very dangerous and, again, a clear breach of legislation.
